Engineering steps for integrating Hydrogen and Nitrogen

Casale, with the support of Hysytech, has focused on- the fundamental engineering aspects of the process. During these activities, Aalborg University has worked on the preliminary mass and energy balance of the process.
Aalborg University and Casale have also developed preliminary Process flow and Piping, and instrumentation diagrams that are needed for the process and its control, where the aim of the process control is to improve productivity, as well as maintain the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and guarantee the safety of the prototype operation.
In the containerised solution, hydrogen is stored in the high-pressure vessel developed by Gas Vessel Production. The high-pressure vessel is filled with the metal-organic frameworks (MOF) materials.
The process includes pre-conditioning steps for temperature, pressure, and flow before feeding into the reactor at the desired operating conditions. The reactor integrates both the ammonia synthesis beds and ammonia sorption bed arranged in multiple layers. Nitrogen and hydrogen react on the catalyst layers, and the resultant ammonia is adsorbed on the adsorption layers. This configuration shifts the reaction equilibrium toward ammonia formation enhancing the conversion of hydrogen and nitrogen into ammonia.
